In writing, try to avoid using this as a defining feature on someone you are writing as evil or unattractive. It can also be more prominent in people with maxillary prognathism (discussed below, otherwise known as an overbite), due to the jaw being recessed. Having excess fullness under the chin can be the result of weight gain or age, or it can just be genetics. When building your character, try to avoid media-based stereotypes such as, someone with fullness under the chin is fat/lazy/evil/dirty, or someone with a weak jawline is nerdy/unattractive/weak, or someone with a strong jawline is handsome/masculine/tough. However, there are a few features about the jaw that can be helpful in building the picture of a character in your reader’s mind. It’s also widely described in writing, especially where displaying masculinity and femininity are considered important in describing the character, such as in romance novels. The jawline has a major impact on what face shape a person is considered to have. Minerva stood before the conclave, radiant in her pride, the crown upon her head enhancing her youthful round features. Here’s another example of an info dump/telling not showing:Įxample: Minerva’s round face was marked by striking black eyes and full lips.Įxample 1: Minerva stared at him tiredly, resting her full cheeks on her hands in a way that made her round face even more innocent.Įxample 2: She held her small chin indignantly high, thin lips pursing. (If you haven’t made it out, the Henry in question is Henry Cavill) The added darkness made his blue eyes even more striking, making it hard to hold his gaze without blushing. Instead, try to work details into the writing:Įxample 1: The overhead light cast dark shadows under Henry’s bold cheekbones, making his square face severe.Įxample 2: Yesterday’s stubble shadowed his jaw, making Henry’s sharp, square jawline appear less pronounced. Work features into the introductory scene, or throughout the first few scenes.Įxample: Henry had a square face with high, bold cheekbones, and a broad chin. Remember, you don’t need to do it all at once. While sometimes unavoidable, it’s better to work details into the story. Info dumps tend to be a lot of telling, not showing. Try to avoid the infamous info dump if you can. However, if you want to call specific attention to something on the main character, something the main character is noting, or something you feel is important to the character, there’s no need to be too detailed. There’s no need to get into describing every character’s face shape or the features thereof. So don’t sweat it too much.Ī long, rounded face shape with a wider forehead, prominent cheekbones, and a narrow, rounded jaw and chin. Someone can also have a different face shape over the years, impacted by maturity and weight. In getting pictures for this article, I’ve seen Scarlett Johansson’s face identified in different articles as diamond, heart, triangle, and oval. Some face shapes can be difficult to tell apart. Here, we’re talking about how the forehead, cheeks, jawline, and (to some degree) the chin affect the shape of the face. Those will be discussed in other articles. When we discuss face shapes here, we will be discussing the structure of the face, not the eyes, nose, lips, etc. Write what you love, folks! Beauty standards are far from timeless. Basically, beauty is an opinion manipulated by your physical and digital environment and social pressures. What everyone sees as physical beauty is not only personal preference which is highly impacted by media, but dependent on region and ethnicity. However, we’re not going to get into which are considered most attractive. Here we’ll talk more about the popular cosmetic definitions for face/head shapes. I’ll spare you the science bit, although I think it’s interesting (but I’m a huge nerd). Depending on who you listen to, there can be up to 9 different face shapes, and this changes if you look at the scientifically categorized face/head shapes.
